Lily is making a big fuss over me. I think that I was missed. The dogs keep crashing out. Maybe they feel safe with me?

Woke up a little before my alarm at 7 AM. Took the dogs out, and decided to go back to sleep for a while. Overslept. Oops. I was dreaming that I was writing a bisexual romance.

Gracie is curled up asleep like a little angel. Damn, the dogs are tired. I guess that they wore themselves out running around at the kennel! Gracie is coughing, and the kennel said that they had a case of kennel cough. I need to call the vet. Done, and I have an appointment this week for her.

Hmm, I think that I want to go to the all-choir carol concert at the uni in the beginning of December. Also, signups are available to do Dial-A-Carol.

I think that I want to nap over lunch and take my shower in the evening. Travel takes it out of me. Overslept my lunchtime nap too. Damn, it's been dark all day. That's probably why I overslept. Oliver wants to spend time with me too. I had to evict him from the bedroom when I took my lunchtime nap because he was lying on my pillow, watching the dogs wrestle.

Well, I got back to Tuesday going through my work email. It's a good start.

I couldn’t find my one pair of “at home” glasses when I got back. How do I keep losing glasses? I even lost a pair on the ship, and I can’t blame Gracie and Bella for that. Luckily, two more pairs of ”at home” glasses came in the mail, so I have a pair.

Bella is back to making me bribe her to come in. That didn’t last long. I told Gracie that next week (!), the new fence will be up, and she’ll be able to chase Bella off-leash. It’ll be like a mini dog park! Speaking of which, I’d like to put Bella and Gracie into doggie day care one day a week so that they can socialize, but I can’t do that until Gracie’s kennel cough is cured anyway.

I’ve been getting ads for heated cat beds on Facebook. I kind of promised Zara one for Christmas. The dogs’ gift will be the new fence (an expensive present!) plus maybe some new toys.

Ack! I saw someone that I’d like to talk to on Bumble BFF, but apparently I need to download a new app and renew. But I got an error when I tried.

I should take out a bag of garbage and get the rest of the mail in. But I think that I'll go to bed early tonight. Or take another nap.

Fed us all. Bella was licking Gracie, and Gracie didn’t want her to stop! Did Bella just cough? Crap.

Got the garbage out. I’m starting to bring in packages from the porch, but I need to rest my back a moment, so I’ll post.

After five months and eight appointments, the tooth that started troubling me in June now has its permanent crown. The fitting it today was a bit trickier than I or the dentist had imagined, but we got there in the end. We have a health-related cashback benefit at work so I finally put the paperwork together and submitted a claim. Usually, it's just a question of attaching your receipt and that's it, but with so many appointments and payments made in stages, I ended up putting together an entire document in addition to a scan of the treatment plan and scans of the receipts. Not sure if it works out, and even when it does, it's not going to be anywhere near the entire cost of treatment, with my cover being just at the basic level where I don't pay anything extra.

I think I'm due a normal check-up soon, but perhaps that will be pushed forward with the number of times I've been at the dentist over the past months.

I woke up at 5:30 AM. I tried to go back to sleep until 6, but I was wide awake. I’ll sleep on the bus.

I’ve made an executive decision to skip choir tonight. I’ll have to pick up the critters this afternoon, and I think that I’ll want a nap afterwards.

Crap. I left my tweed jacket on the ship. I found another one on eBay in case I don’t get it back.

Showered and packed up, and I have 40 minutes to kill.

Note to self: leaving for cruise on Dec. 24th and back on the 3rd.

Waiting for the bus. I almost tripped and fell getting off of the shuttle. On the bus now. Napped for two hours. The bus got in early.

I’m back home. I need to change my clothes, eat lunch, and pick up the fur faces. They’re home now. I need to feed them, and then it’s nap time.

The boarding place is full over Christmas, so I need to figure out other plans for my second cruise. Contacted another place.

I drove past a place that sells knee braces. I should go talk to them.

Bella’s crashed out cold. Too much excitement? Fed the beasts. Now I need to eat (done). I want to nap and do does Bella. We three conked out cold. I was feeling cold, but then I had a dog on either side of me. Toasty warm.

It’s raining out. Fed the cats. Fed the dogs. I want to get in my pajamas and go back to sleep.

I could have slept later. Oh well. Had a nice breakfast. Now I wait for my group to be called.

I’m looking at pictures of my pets. I’ll see them tomorrow!

At the airport. I’m hungry, but there doesn’t seem to be a restaurant outside of security, and I need to drop my bag at noon. (It’s currently 10:30.) I found food. I had the Cuban version of a cheese Hot Pocket, except it didn’t have cheese in it. And a slice of Carrot Cake.

Okay, the hotel in Chicago said to call them when I’m ready for the shuttle.

Security pawed through my backpack, and found a full-size sunscreen that I forgot about.

Had lunch.

At the gate. I don’t see a place to charge my phone, and it’s my boarding pass. It’s an hour before boarding. I do have a charged brick though, so I guess that I’m okay.

As soon as the airplane doors close, I conk out. We left an hour late due to some problems finding a box for a mysterious battery. But I slept until we took off.

In Chicago, at the hotel, getting a bite to eat. Apparently I screwed up and made the hotel reservation for last night, not tonight, but they had a room. I DoorDashed some soda and breakfast bars. I need to go to sleep soon because I have to get up early to go back to O’Hare and catch the bus to Champaign.

Woke up at 7:30 AM. I had some problems falling asleep. I’m going to stay on the ship today.

Hmm. The ship’s crew is “assessing whether the tender operations will be safe”. I think staying on the ship is the right decision. They said that it would be unsafe, and they’re going to head to Miami.

The guy was cleaning my stateroom when I came down, so I waited in the lounge. Nap time now.

My electric razor is turning itself on and off. I’ll need to chuck it when I get back.

The pool is packed. I’ll try it around dinner time, when it empties out.

I don’t know why the motion of the ship was bothering me yesterday. I feel fine now and we’re on the way to Miami.

I’m mostly packed. I just left out my swimsuit, shower stuff, and pajamas. I decided to wear my short-sleeved shirt tomorrow because I’ll be hanging out in the Miami airport for hours. (And I won’t be able to check my luggage in for quite a while.) I have a coat that I can throw on in Chicago.

Went to pay my bill, but it’s on my card already. Dinner time. Checked into my flight. I’m tired. I might skip the pool. I did take a dip in the pool. I like it. I was the only person there.

Showered (because I need to pack my shampoo, etc.) Finished packing and put my suitcase out in the hall to be wrangled off of the ship.

Finished my book (bio of Johnny Carson). I think that it’s bedtime because I want to get up early and eat breakfast before I leave the ship.

This morning brought sunshine, slightly hazy, but absolutely gorgeous nonetheless. I ventured out for some parkrun tourism and it was great to be out in that sunshine, even if the wind was rather brisk and chilly.

My train from Edinburgh departed at midday, so I didn't really have time for anything apart from parkrun. The journey was uneventful and I spent it reading. And the cross-London transfer and train journey home were equally unremarkable. There were some delays and changes on GWR trains after Storm Claudia, but that didn't really affect me, as I'd always aim for whichever would depart next. All the issues were apparently further west down the line.

It took multiple tries to get my Dramamine open. Damn child-proof caps. It seems to be helping.

Fell back to sleep eventually and woke up at 7:30 AM. We lost an hour last night. (We’re back on Miami time.) After my shower, I went into the Studio Lounge, and saw a bunch of older ladies who got up early. I found my tribe! But they went away.

I’m going to talk to the shore excursions person about going to the beach tomorrow.

Napped. Had lunch. The Dramamine (?) is giving me IBS symptoms. I think that I want to lie down and settle my stomach after they finish making up my room.

I left my gray purse somewhere. I just had a values notebook in there, so no big deal if I don’t get it back, but it’s annoying. I went to Guest Services but they don’t have it. I want to talk to Shore Excursions about the beach tomorrow, but they aren’t there until 5.

I checked out the shops, and except for a hat, there’s nothing much. And I already have a hat but forgot it.

Hmm. Maybe I should rent a scooter next time?

I talked to Shore Excursions, and they said to wait until they announce Open Tender to get to shore. I’ll see how I feel in the morning.

I watched Hamilton on pay-per-view. At first, I was like WTF? But eventually I got into it.

I got my purse back. Alleluia. And I found out how disembarking works. I’m going to get to the airport way early.

I’m having stomach cramps. I’m a mess. I should go to bed soon.

Today, I started my day by heading out to the National Galleries Modern. There's actually Modern One and Modern Two, but I only went to the former. There are some sculptures outside, too. Like the name suggests, the art on display is from 1900 onwards or so, mostly organised thematically. Very enjoyable. I had lunch there before taking the steps down from the museum to the riverside and following the Water of Leith walkway for a while for my walk back towards the city centre. There's an Antony Gormley sculpture in the river, and a riverside AIDS memorial.

Before going to the National Museum of Scotland, I made detour to the National Galleries National shop. At the National Museum, there was so much to see I barely made it through two areas.

The weather today was a clear improvement on yesterday: clear and bright if not particularly sunny, although breezier and a bit colder than yesterday. It had cleared rained during the time I'd been in the National Museum, and there was some more before I made it back to where I'm staying. I probably don't have time for anything much tomorrow before my train south departs.

Tired Day

I’m having problems falling asleep. I need to wait for my meds to kick in. Illinois time is two hours earlier. That doesn’t help.

It occurred to me that they sell canes with a built-in seat. I found some on Amazon. Butt-ugly but functional. I need to get one before my cruise in December.

Woke up at 7:30 AM. I had intended to sleep until 9, but I seem to be awake. Got laundry together. I want my clothes for the plane ride cleaned. Plus I’m washing underwear in the sink. They have a clothesline in the shower.

The hostess at the restaurant saw me and told someone to get me a Diet Coke. She said that she remembered me.

The perfect weather ran out. It was pouring, and there were people in swimsuits huddling in the doorway.

The air conditioning is cold. I moved myself to a table outside. It’s around 80F outside, so it’s fairly pleasant.

I’m waiting for my room to be cleaned. Usually it’s around 2 PM. I’d like a nap. I came downstairs at 2, but the cleaner hadn’t done my room yet. He dropped everything to get it done, which was nice. Nap time.

Now it’s dinner time. This coffee shop is a real find and it’s free.

Another weird body thing: the thumb and index finger of my left hand is tingling. No idea what’s going on but it shouldn’t be doing that. I’m coming up with a list of things about which to talk to the doctor.

I should describe the ship. It’s 17 stories, so it’s a behemoth. The 17th deck has the pool and the buffet. Shops and restaurants are on decks 7 and 8. My stateroom is on deck 12. The gangway is on deck 4. Maybe I’ll take pictures of the ship tomorrow for the edification of those who never have taken a cruise ship.

The boat was rocking and I was getting a little queasy, so I lay down and woke up at 2:30 AM.

November rain in Edinburgh

Last night, instead of starting to settle for the night I headed out to travel to London Euston to catch Caledonian Sleeper to Edinburgh. I got onboard soon after it opened after 10.30pm and settled down to sleep fairly soon, but wasn't really asleep when we departed a quarter to midnight. I slept rather fitfully and when my alarm went off at seven in the morning I thought there was something odd going on. It took me a little while to figure out what it was from what was hearing and what Caledonian Sleeper had messaged. We were being held at Carlisle because the line was blocked ahead. The reason was initially cited as a broken-down train, later they suggested the breakdown was related to flooding on the line. In any case, we stood at Carlisle long enough that the Edinburgh portion ended up arriving over two hours behind schedule. That was actually fine with me, as I'd been wondering what I'd do in the morning if it was raining heavily and I'd have two hours to kill. In the end, I just took my bigger bag to left luggage and headed straight out to the National Galleries of Scotland, the National, and enjoyed looking at art there. After it, I went to St. Giles and had a look around and did some walking about at the castle end of the Royal Mile. And then went to the castle, where I had the official guided tour, followed by visiting some of the buildings at the site. Even on a grey rainy day, the views were wonderful. And although rain made it harder to just enjoy walking around, it wasn't anything I hadn't expected and the forecast for tomorrow is better.

Not One of My Better Birthdays

Today is my birthday. I’m 63, which has no meaning.

I can’t find my glasses. I tore the stateroom apart looking for them, and it’s not that large. I’m wearing my spare set.

The shore excursion is at the civilized hour of 1:30 PM, so I have time to kill. Had breakfast. Cute kid at the next table. She was throwing the cream packets around and “dancing” to the music. Tiny kid. She got a lot of attention from the staff.

St. Thomas looks pretty. We have had great weather for the trip so far.

Not sure what to do with myself. Got my swimsuit on under my clothes and went out to wait for the shore excursion. Here’s what happened. I was waiting in line for the excursion when my knee gave out, and I fell to the ground, gashing my knee. Well, that attracted a lot of attention. Someone gave me their water. Someone from the ship grabbed a wheelchair and helped me into it. They wheeled me into the medical facility, which is surprisingly big. They wanted to do x-rays—I said no, nothing’s broken— and gave me a Breathalyzer test. (No alcohol, which is what I told them.) The doctor looked at my wound and put some antibiotic ointment on it. He told me to stay out of the water until it scabs over. Then I had to repeat my story for the third time for Security. They insisted on wheeling me back to my stateroom in a wheelchair. I had about had enough of them. The gash is no big deal, but is attracting comments.

So I don’t know. The knee that gave out has a torn ACL. Do I need a brace or cane if I’m going to be standing?

Read for a while (book #3) and napped for an hour. Finished my book.

I ate a big lunch after they let me out of Medical, and I’m still not very hungry. So I just ate a couple of slices of banana bread in the Studio Lounge and am calling it good. I’m going to sleep soon and won’t set an alarm. I had a shore excursion at 6:30 AM, but that’s not happening.

Finished since the last reading post
Co-intelligence by Ethan Mollick, which was OK. It's subtitled Living and working with AI, so that's what it does, proposing principles of how to adopt AI and the roles you can usefully cast into—as a coworker, tutor, and so on.

Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson, with Jackson trying to find the biological family of a woman whose adoptive parents moved from Yorkshire to New Zealand when she was a baby, and feeling he's not really getting anywhere, totally unaware of all the other changes happening in the lives of the people who he needs to talk to. This book kept surprising me.

Currently reading
Started reading The Lost Abbot by Susanna Gregory, where Matthew and company are in Peterborough looking for the abbot who's disappeared but many assume is already dead. No progress with anything else, I don't think.

Reading next
I've packed one more book for this week's trip but mostly just keeping with the books I'm already reading.

Reading Day

I did get up on time, amazingly enough. Threw myself together. But I am very tired. The only time that I have been up this early on a cruise was for the transit of the Panama Canal, which was worth it. The shore excursion is five hours including a 45 drive on limited sleep. It would have to be some incredible beach. So no. I’m going to change out of my swimsuit (under my clothes) and get a proper breakfast.

I’m at the 24-hour diner. The joint is jumping with early risers. The available drinks are a choice of coffee or coffee, so I’m dealing with it. Actually, it’s not bad coffee. Had some delicious French toast.

A couple in the elevator asked if I had any fun plans, and I said, “Um, I’m going back to sleep!” They laughed.

Slept for a couple of hours. Now I’m having lunch at the same cafe at which I had breakfast. Had a Coney Dog with chili and cheese. Apple pie for dessert. Clearly avoiding the buffet is the way to go.

Cool. The boarding place sent me pictures of the cats (who don’t look particularly happy, but they’re okay). It’s good to know my babies are okay.

Now I’m kicking myself for not getting off the ship this morning. It’s too late now, 1:00 and we leave at 3:30. I did finish a book and started a new one. Took another nap. I’m hungry.

We’re moving again. They aren’t kidding when they set a departure time. Read for a while. Had a taste for pizza, so I went to the buffet and had some and some soft-serve ice cream.

I think that I’ll read some more. It’s kind of a nothing day, but I like it.

Still kind of sore from the massage yesterday. I should see if there’s a hot tub. Checked out the hot tubs. Full of people.

Why women live longer than men: A guy was telling a story about how he was drunk on a boat and decided to swim to shore. Two-thirds of the way there, he realized that was a bad idea. He cut his hands and feet on coral getting out. (Obviously, he survived to tell the tale.) Another guy had been stung by a stingray.

Stayed up late reading my book. I should go to bed now.

Spa Day

I had some problems falling back to sleep, not surprisingly. Then I overslept an hour. Jumped into the shower and threw myself together. Was on my way out when I discovered sweet rolls in the Studio Lounge. Decided that was breakfast, and they had a soda machine. As it turns out, the time went ahead an hour last night, so I wouldn’t have made it to breakfast anyway.

Today is an “at sea” day. It’s going to be a spa day, with a mani-pedi and massage. I’m reading in the Observation Lounge. I’m going to hang out until lunch. I’m trying to decide whether to hit the pool, but I think not today.

Ate lunch. I’ve been living on pizza because I don’t like the rest of the food. It makes me think of Holland America with great fondness because it had terrific food.

Well heck. I stayed out until noon, but they haven’t made up my room. I’d like to take a nap. Dozed a little but couldn’t sleep. I snagged a Core Values deck and journal to work on. I need to check with the Shore Excursions desk though because one of mine didn’t go through. I booked it now (for the day after tomorrow), but I need a ticket.

Sorted through my values cards. Wound up with 12 pulled out. In looking through them, I’m coming up with “Creativity, Curiosity, and Contribution”? Well, that didn’t take long.

I’m feeling very relaxed. This is good. This is what I needed.

Stopped at the Shore Excursions desk, but it’s closed until 4 PM. A sign says that tickets will be delivered though. Stopped at the spa, and my mani-pedi is at 3, not 5. I’m glad that I checked.

The mani-pedi took almost two hours. The technician was so zealous in going after cuticles that a couple of fingers bled. I like the color that I selected, kind of a medium pink. I was told sternly to wait for 20 minutes before putting my sandals on, so I’m hanging out.

My technician said to eat in the main dining room, not the buffet, so I’ll try that. Their dress code says “no short shorts,” so I’ll change into some Bermuda shorts.

I went to the “Commodore Room” for dinner. That’s more like it. French Onion soup as an appetizer and Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo as the main course. They were disappointed that I didn’t order wine, which is how they make their money. Apple strudel for dessert. All complimentary.

I knew that it snowed in Urbana, but it was still a jolt to see pictures of the dogs in the snow. I didn’t get to see Gracie’s reaction to it.

I really want to take a nap now, but I have my massage at 8. I have an hour to kill. I’m trying to figure out tomorrow morning. My shore excursion is at 7:30 AM, ack! There is a 24-hour restaurant to which I could go to breakfast or order room service. No, my ticket says that we’re meeting at 7 AM!

Had my massage. She used more pressure than I’m used to, and she found every sore spot on my body and rubbed it. I had to ask her to stop on one spot because it was too painful. She said, “You’re harboring a lot of tension [there], and I said, “Yeah, but it HURTS.”

I got my stuff together for the morning. Now I need to crash quickly.

On the Ship

Got up at 7:30 AM. I’m feeling hammered, but all I need to do is get on the ship and eat lunch, and then I can take a nap.

Great. The toilet isn’t flushing. I’m going to give this hotel a hard pass next time.

I decided to wear my travel vest instead of my linen jacket because it’ll be cooler.

Got the address of the pier. I know that it’s down the street from me. Traffic in Miami is brutal. Lots of honking.

It’s hard to believe that it’s going to snow in Urbana.

Note to self: Bella needs shots in November.

Five? Seven? Cruise ships were loading. Traffic was a nightmare, and I was glad that the Uber driver had to deal with it, not me. The embarkation process was fairly simple and organized. No long lines.

On the ship. I’m less than impressed with Norwegian thus far. They don’t communicate well. The rooms aren’t ready, not surprisingly. Had lunch. I really would like a nap. Finally the rooms were ready, and I took a nap.

My studio room is nice. Tiny, but nice. There’s a bed, a desk but no desk chair, and a bathroom. That’s it. I don’t miss a window, so that’s good to know for future trips.

IMG_1532.jpegIMG_1534.jpeg

Was woken up by a safety briefing. None of the entertainment options interest me. I think that I want to make it an early night.

My drink of choice is a Diet Coke. I’m a real party animal. The restaurant staff are a little too on the ball. I got a plate of food, put it on a table, and went to get a soda, and when I got back, the food was gone.

We’re moving now, and the city lights are pretty in the dusk.

The Observation Lounge is going to be my home away from home. It’s nice and quiet away from all the partying people.

I should see if my suitcase has been delivered. It has been. (For those who haven’t been on a cruise, you drop off your luggage when you arrive at the embarkation point, and it gets delivered later.)

Took a nap and slept until 1 AM. I’m officially caught up on my sleep.

My laptop isn’t booting up. I can’t cope. It finally booted up, but any WiFi I access says “No Internet “. It’s telling me to restart my laptop. I think that I’ll give up and go back to sleep.

... but the next project has progressed to the point I cut the pattern pieces today. There was a moment of concern when I started cutting the pieces from the rib as I'd thought I'd ordered more than I needed, but I realised I hadn't accounted for the narrow width. There was just enough in the end, though, so I don't have to scramble for more right now. I didn't proceed to sewing yet as I wanted to make some progress on the jumper I'm knitting.

In other news, yesterday, after coming back from the cinema, watched the new Time Team episode, covering a couple of summers of digging at the abbey at Cerne Abbas.

I almost forgot my tooth that replaces the one that broke. I realized it when the Uber was on his way, but I made a mad dash in.

On the bus to O’Hare. At O’Hare. Dropped my suitcase off. Had a sandwich for lunch. At the gate.

The boarding place has an app on which they post pictures. Bella and Gracie look like they’re having the time of their life.

I’m in Miami. Miami is hot. Had a chatty Uber driver who said that I looked tired. I’m DoorDashing a poke bowl and soda. The poke bowl didn't have a fork, so I ate it with my hands (at least the protein, pineapple, and mango). The hotel room kind of sucks, and the WiFi isn't working. But I seriously need to crash.

I saw The Choral mentioned in the local indie cinema weekly email, but when I went to book it for today, it had disappeared, so I checked the screenings at Vue and booked that instead. Looks like it's listed on the indie again, so whatever reason it wasn't available when I looked, it was resolved later, and I could have gone there after all.

Anyway, it was a good way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon but on the whole, it was a bit shallow and stereotypical. Some of that was probably because of the ensemble choral society aspect, so there were a bunch of central characters and all had to had their backstories told very economically. And it was yet another work to point to the enduring fascination about the first world war.

Scanned my music and sent it to my singing teacher. Printed off some music to work on on the ship. Grabbed my passport. I can’t find my Global Entry card. I don’t need it for the cruise, but I’ll need it for my trip to Europe next fall.

I’m going to have to run to the vet to get flea meds for Gracie. I did, but they gave me HeartGard instead, so I used one of Bella's flea meds and just didn't give her all of it.

Cleaned out the car and put dog and cat food in it. I don’t have enough cat food, so I ordered an express order from Walmart. I couldn’t find my order of bulbs. Did someone take it?

Things that you say only if you have pets: “Oliver, stop sticking your head down my pants!” ( I was in the bathroom.) “Gracie, don’t put your nose there either!”

Hmm. Maybe I should have lunch before I shower (done).

Oliver knocked down my laptop and the I key fell off. This is a new laptop! Thanks a lot, Oliver. I wonder if I could get it fixed.

Operation Cat- and Dog-Nap went off without a hitch, although Zara was hissing at me and tried to hide. They’re settled in at the boarding place. This is the part of the trip that I worried about the most.

Ran my errands. Got my meds. I was able to get everything else that I needed at Schnucks. Contacted my singing teacher and told her that I wasn't going to make the lesson. Got the new filters for my hearing aids and she changed them and the dome for me. I saw a display of Dubai chocolates and grabbed them.

Got home. Put clothes in the dryer. Checked into my flight. Now I think that I'll pop a couple of Dubai chocolates and go pack.

Well, hell. I went to email my dad my cruise details, when I discovered that I had also booked a flight on American Airlines to and from Miami! I used a different email address than I usually do for some reason. I want to use the airfare for a trip to New York a year from December, but I couldn't book that far out, so I booked it for March and will change it in January.

I can't stop yawning. This is not a good sign because I want to pull an all-nighter to make sure that I don't miss my 7 AM bus. Maybe I will take a nap after I finish packing.

Well, everything is piled up on my suitcase, but I couldn't find the shampoo and conditioner bottles. So off I went to Meijer to get some bottles. I also found a nice shave cream in travel size. I'm taking a break now to eat something.

I'm packed. Now I'm going to do some tidying up. I think that I'll post now though.
