I feel like...the 'I am _' thing for identity is a paradigm that needs to be chucked in the bin, unless you're going to repeat to yourself that 'I am {anecdata}' and add absolutely zero qualifiers.
Exactly!! I can't imagine how satisfying it would have felt to say that in response to adults' persistent questioning. Foreclosing on an identity is easy, but I'm learning that you're not really ending the conversation with yourself- merely delaying it.
