On Distractions again...
Thinking today of the constant distractions everywhere. It seems the world does not want us to be better. The distractions are everywhere. In what we eat, what we do, what we watch, and even what we think. It feels almost as if the world is set against us doing things that bring traction. Nir Eyal talks about the concept of traction v. distractions. The things that you want to do are tractions.
I am feeling this opposition right now. Trying not to buy new things has been tough. There are ads and messaging in everything that constantly screams "BUY THIS NEW THING". Does not even matter if you're just going to the grocers. Walk into a Trader Joe's and notice how much of it is not food-stuff. There are knick-knacks and tchotchkes wherever you look. Buying used things or going without is challenging when everything wants you to consume more.
It feels like that on the computer as well. It is just so much easier and accessible to hop onto reddit, youtube, or "read the news" than it is to sit down to write or learn something new. Though my habit of reading books has continued, it is in -constant- war with all these distractions.
